The problem is that whilst Nintendo have been reeling from past failures (N64, GameCube and Wii) a new player has emerged to eat up the casual games market: Apple.

So expect to see one or two more retarded efforts from Nintendo. Then watch the board shitcan the CEO. Then watch as the new CEO rolls out a new crazy strategy of making games for the platform of choice of casual gamers with money to spend: iOS. (A good example of this process is Microsoft, who have just completed stage two by firing Ballmer.)

The Wii actually outsold both the xbox360 and the Ps3 in terms of console units sold, granted it was at a lower price then the other two.
However i don't think the problem with Nintendo is the consoles, its the lack of unique games that are actually on offer. You can have the best console with all the best hardware but if their is physically no games on it too play its pointless to get (Wii u..).
Apart from the standard re-released every year nintendo games you get on these consoles their really is nothing new and inventive you could buy.
Wii u now does get the AAA+ titles now like the other two consoles however why would you go out and buy another consoles to play those when most likely you already have a console/pc that can already play them.

It might have had the highest amount of units purchased, but the amount of them returned or traded in was also the highest of the 3.

Yes, more units sold != more successful.

Nintendo have unique games that people play again and again. On no other platform will you find The Mario franchise. Or Donkey Kong for that matter. And games like Resident Evil 4 were at their best on the Wii. Yes these are old games being rehashed but there are a lot of people who love them.

Which brings me back to the hardware. The hardware is the problem. The people who make up the bulk of the casual gaming market are moving away from desktop PCs and games consoles, like the Wii, and are moving to their iPhones and iPads. And if Nintendo aren't there to greet them and take their money then someone else will (e.g. Rovio, PopCap/EA).

I agree that the Wii U is a dud. But not because of a lack of games (nearly all consoles lack games for the first six months). Rather that it's Nintendo's stubborn denial of reality that is driving the company into the ground.

Not really a surprise though: Japanese culture is notorious for encouraging people to deny reality in an attempt to save face (sometimes just before it melts off).

Apart from all the games that, you know, sell like hotcakes there's nothing to buy.

Games don't need to be innovative to sell; they don't even have to be new.

The so called AAA+ title market is a completely different market than the one Nintendo have be catering to for the past decade or more. It's a market in which they have no ground to stand on. No one takes them seriously.

Meanwhile they're losing the only strong mark they had. It's sad.

Funny, I bought a Wii for my mum on her 50th. Guess that makes me a girl. ;-)

I mean working units returned to the stores to be resold as second hand, not ones that set fire to themselves and HAD to be returned Tongue
