So I've created this dilemma for myself. Up until last night I had my mind set on ditching Eyefinity and going all out with a really nice 27" screen, one that has freesync, 144hz, shit hot res all on an IPS panel.

But then I thought, why don't I buy an nVidia 1070 which according to GPUboss beats my 290X by some margin, and then sell the 290X for £130-£150 (according to those currently confirmed sold 290X on Ebay), and then make up the difference to get a £200 monitor. Two pieces of hardware upgraded instead of just the one. Makes sense to me. What about you guys?

£400 monitor? or £400 graphics card with a £200 monitor?

You can still get some nice monitors for £200, 144Hz for example which would feel like night and day for you in CS. Question is do you plan to actually utilize the £400 card, and would the 290x you have be able to run the games you want to to the resolution of the £400 monitor you have your eyes set on?

Personally i'd get the card, and go for a 144Hz monitor. It may only have to be 1080p but that card will last you until it literally dies at 1080p, you could always stick out a little longer with the current monitors and get yourself a monitor in the £250-300 range which would have a few more of the features you want, and would leave you in a better position overall.

Monitor I currently have my eyes set on, with the nvidia card you would also be able to experiment with 3D at some point in the future too: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/24-asus-...1ms-speake

Cheers, I'll go down that road, and if I time it right with Black Friday, I could easily push to £250 for the monitor even if it means waiting an extra month or two. Like you say, having that card will futureproof me for years and as nice as it would be to go higher, I'm happy to stick at 1080p if need be once I get the new monitor.

Higher res monitors are very nice however, and that card will handle a higher res one no problem, like you said if you hold out for a black friday deal on a 1440p or even a 4k monitor then you'll be laughing. I'd get a 144hz 1080p but that's just preference, i'd sooner have the higher refresh rate and my card wouldn't handle higher than 1080p at a decent framerate with todays games anyway.
